Where Is Your Joy Anchored?

Where is Your Joy Anchored Dennis Swanberg

When life is smooth and predictable, joy comes easy. But what happens when things start to fall apart? What happens when uncertainty creeps in from every direction—whether through health worries, unexpected financial strain, or the constant noise of a chaotic world?

I’ve spent time thinking about this lately, especially about how fragile our sense of peace can be if it’s anchored to the wrong things.

We live in a culture that tells us security is found in what we accumulate. We’re tempted to measure our stability by our bank accounts, our career success, our possessions, or even our political views. But when the ground beneath us shakes, those things quickly reveal how hollow they really are. None of them can offer comfort when real crisis strikes.

There is, however, a joy that cannot be shaken.

It’s not a temporary happiness based on favorable circumstances or a good week. It’s a deep, unshakeable joy found in Christ alone. When everything around us seems uncertain, a relationship with Jesus Christ provides an anchor that holds steady through any storm. Along with that foundation, God gives us the incredible gift of family and the support of a family of faith.

That is real wealth. That is the kind of richness that carries us through the darkest valleys and out onto the other side.

In Habakkuk 3:18-19, the prophet writes during a time of absolute devastation and ruin, yet his words echo with unbreakable confidence:

“Yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! God the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights!”

Habakkuk didn’t say he would rejoice because everything was perfect; he chose to rejoice in the God of his salvation despite his circumstances. God was his strength, giving him the surefootedness of a deer to navigate steep, hazardous terrain.

If you’re walking through a season of difficulty or feeling overwhelmed by the unpredictability of life today, I want to encourage you to take a breath and refocus on what truly matters. Invest in your relationship with God. Lean on your family and your faith community. Shift your eyes off the temporary noise and back onto the eternal promise of Christ.

When we ground our lives in Him, we find a strength that doesn’t falter and a peace that doesn’t depend on the news cycle.

What is your source of joy today? Take a moment to reflect on where your heart is resting—and if you need to, anchor it back in Him.
